Starbucks Debuts Virtual ‘My Starbucks’ Barista

IMG_7979 (1)Starbucks announced a beta test for a virtual barista that uses artificial intelligence to speak with customers and take orders.

An extension of Starbucks Mobile Order & Pay, the new feature, My Starbucks Barista, is currently in beta and available on the iOS platform. It allows a customer to speak with the virtual barista to place the order as if he were talking to a barista in a Starbucks location.

It will be available to one thousand customers nationwide during the initial beta test and the company plans to roll it out gradually through the summer. Starbucks also plans to later introduce an Android version.

The feature also supports typing the order, in a manner similar to using a chatbot. The virtual barista will confirm the pick-up location and take payment for the order.

“The Starbucks experience is built on the personal connection between our barista and customer, so everything we do in our digital ecosystem must reflect that sensibility,” said Gerri Martin-Flickinger, the coffee company’s CTO.
