Restaurant Review: Matsuhisa Munich and Bar31, Munich, Germany

Having enjoyed many meals at Nobu New York, I was looking forward to trying Chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa’s cuisine in Munich, where it recently opened in the Mandarin Oriental.

Chef Nobu, as he is known, is renowned for his innovative dishes, such as “New Style Sashimi” and the legendary “Black Cod,” therefore I was curious to try his Munich outpost, the first in Germany.

Unfortunately, the night I was available, the restaurant was closed for a special event but I needn’t have fretted. There are actually two of his outposts at the Mandarin Oriental, the second being Bar31, which also offers the chef’s Japanese-Peruvian cuisine.

Bar31 is trendy and stylish, making it seem like an outpost of Brooklyn, while the main dining room is somewhat more traditional, suffused with warm browns and golds.

Drinks at Bar31 are accompanied by chips and nuts which were quite good and something you definitely wouldn’t find in the main dining room. I selected a 2015 Birnauer Weißburgunder to accompany my meal, a lively light gold white with a fragrant pear aroma and hints of lemon and nuts.
