IMG_8285JetBlue Airways, an airline that was founded in 1998 and hence was not around in the 1960s, announced a retrojet livery celebrating that decade.

The aircraft, an Airbus A320 named “What’s Old is Blue Again,” features JetBlue orange and blue speed stripes characteristic of the period, and the airline’s name in a period typeface. The words “New York International” accompany the airline’s name on the aircraft, paying homage to its New York roots.

The plane’s tail is designed, the airline said, to have been something that would have stood out in the 1960s, featuring white and two shades of blue along with the airline’s name in what the carrier says is a 1960s jazz-inspired font.

JetBlue is introducing the aircraft on its JFK-Palm Springs route, a decision the airline said was made because of Palm Springs’ prominence in mid-century modern architecture. Passengers onboard the first flights between the two cities will receive an amenity kit inspired by the 1960s, with items such as playing cards, a luggage tag, vintage-style postcards, and a commemorative pin.
