‘Fun Home’

“Fun Home” is the musical version of Alison Bechdel’s “family tragicomic” and novel about growing up as a lesbian, with a closeted gay father, and the winner of five Tony Awards including best new musical.

“The folksy score presents a stark contrast to the darkness that envelops this family,” opined Jonathan Spira in his review.

Alison is a girl who refuses to wear a party dress with a father who leads numerous double lives, starting as an English teacher who also runs a funeral home. All this continues while they attempt to maintain the façade of a perfect family living in a perfect home.

‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’

Hedwig is the story of a rock band, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, fronted of course by Hedwig, formerly Hansel, whose gender is indefinable after undergoing a botched sex change operation in order to marry an American and leave East Germany.

We first saw “Hedwig” off Broadway in 1998 with John Cameron Mitchell in the title role and, more recently, with Darren Criss after Neil Patrick Harris originated the role in the show’s first Broadway production, which opened in 2014.

Armed with a “wig in a box,” numerous double entendres, and infectious songs that you’ll be humming all the way home, it’s a show that you won’t want to miss.
