BMW announced the new, seventh-generation 5 Series on Wednesday.

The new 5er, developed from the ground up, weighs less (as much as 137 pounds or 62 kilograms) due to the use of magnesium, aluminum, and high-strength-steel, offers a new user interface, iDrive 6.0, and a new head-up display. New driver assistance systems and remote control parking are a step towards semi-autonomous driving, the company said.

The new model comes with LED headlights as standard equipment. The car is longer by 1.2” (30.5 mm), 0.3” wider (7.6 mm), and 0.6” taller (15.2 mm), with a 117.1” wheelbase that is 0.2” (5 mm) longer as well.

On the EfficientDynamics front, all variants of the new 5er will come with active kidney grille slats that remain closed for improved aerodynamics and only open when greater cooling is required. BMW is using Air Curtains in the front apron along with Air Breathers to cut air turbulence in the wheel openings and channel air more efficiently when the car is in motion. The automaker said it is also optimizing underbody sealing to reduce lift.

To be available in 13 colors, the new 5er will appear at dealerships starting in February 2017. The sport model including sport seats will be standard, emphasizing the car’s sporty character, and options will include the M Sport Paket, which includes M Aerodynamic kit, shadowline trim, a lowered suspension, and 19” M Double-Spoke Wheels. Multi-contour seats will once again be an option, as will massage and ventilation options for the front seats. The massage option will include eight programs that BMW says can target specific areas, including relaxing the muscles in the back and relieving the strain on the spinal discs while driving.

At launch, the 5er will be offered as a 530i with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine developing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, capable of going from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in six seconds (5.8 with xDrive). The new 540i will offer a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine that puts out 332 pound-feet of torque and can take the car from 0-60 in just 4.9 seconds and 4.7 with xDrive, an increase of 7/10th of a second over its predecessor, the 535i.
