Marriott to Return Desks to Their Rightful Place in Hotel Guest Rooms

Marriott International was tired of having guests ask what happened to the desk that was supposed to be in their guest room, so the hotelier is putting them back where they belong.

The trend started years ago when Marriott and other hotel chains began to remove writing desks under the mistaken belief that modern technology had rendered them obsolete. The practice of omitting a desk has also been criticized multiple times in hotel rooms in these pages.

The desks are making an appearance in redesigned Marriott guest rooms that have already been unveiled in 25 properties. The so-called “modern guest rooms” have desks on wheels and hardwood floors, and many have walk-in showers with no soaking tub, depending on the type of property.

The change is specific to Marriott-branded hotels and there has been no announcement as to whether other deskless brands in the newly combined Marriott-Starwood family will follow suit.
