Astoria, Oregon

Portland has one of the most vibrant music scenes in the country. It is home to both the Kingsmen and Paul Revere and the Raiders, both known for their renditions of the song “Louie Louie.” Kurt Cobain met Courtney Love in the now-demolished Satyricon in 1990, and the city also offers a wide range of classical music ensembles including the Oregon Symphony, the Portland Opera, and the Portland Youth Philharmonic.

Nearby Pendleton Mills, whose woolen blankets you’ll find on some of the city’s best hotel beds, offers free tours of their factory across the river in Washougal, Washington, and has a store offering their own products next door (the tours actually start and end in the store).

Finally, consider a daytrip to Astoria, a small city near the mouth of the Columbia River, known for having been the first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast. Enjoy the waterfront by taking the Astoria Riverfront Trolley, which runs along the Columbia River, and consider visiting the Columbia River Maritime Museum and the Clatsop County Historical Society Heritage Museum located in the Old City Hall.

WHERE TO STAY

The Sentinel, consisting of two historic buildings – one a former Elks Lodge – that were joined in 1992, opened under its current moniker in 2014. The hotel is known for its friendly staff and luxurious accommodations. Some rooms offer private terraces with fire pits and all have Pendleton woolen blankets.

The Hotel Lucia is known for its collection of photographs by native Oregonian and Pulitzer Prize winner David Hume Kennerly. Large prints of his images, ranging from politicians to celebrities, hang on its walls. Guests entering the hotel are greeted by a wall of cameras from photography’s earlier days.

WHERE TO EAT

One of our favorite restaurants in the city is Clyde Common, a trendy tavern with communal dining tables and an excellent wine list that includes several excellent Austrian Grüner Veltliners.
