UK Votes in Favor of Brexit in EU Referendum
Britain voted Thursday to leave the European Union, sending shockwaves across Europe and financial markets across the globe.
Despite heavy rains, working-class voters turned out in record numbers to hand a stunning rebuke to the prime minister and the status quo. At 4:45 a.m. local time, the BBC called the result of the historic referendum.
While it will take a minimum of several years to begin Britain’s exit from the EU, or Brexit as it has been popularly referred to, the reaction in financial markets was swift: the pound fell to a 30-year low after rising earlier on predictions of a vote to remain in the European Union.
Meanwhile, the big issues – what this means to trade, finance, and immigration among other concerns – have yet to be settled about Britain’s post-EU existence.
