Four Tips for Using Google Effectively for Travel
Google. People either love it (when they find what they are looking for) or hate it (when confronted with 564,968 results, none of which are correct) but it can be a traveler’s best friend.
Here are some tips on how to use Google effectively to quickly get information while planning a trip or traveling.
1.) Exchange Rates
Simply type in the amount in the currency for which you have a price followed by the name of the currency to which you’d like to convert it, and voilà!
For example, if you are thinking of making a purchase that’s €149, simply type “€149 in US dollars“ and Google will respond with the current conversion rate, which is $169 at the time of publication.
2.) The current time in distant cities
Placing a phone call home, to your planned destination, or just to a friend? No matter where you are, if you want to know the current time in Vienna, simply type “Time in Vienna” into the Google search bar and Google will respond with
Monday, June 6, 2016 (GMT+2)
Time in Vienna, Austria
3.) Google does weather
If you want to know what the weather is anywhere in the world, simply type “weather in (name of city”) and you will get a quick overview with a choice of Fahrenheit or Celsius.
Sunday, 9:00 PM
Clear with periodic clouds
Wind: 9 mph
4.) Google can translate
If you need to translate text or a web page, Google is a decent if imperfect resource.
Typing “Where is the post office in German” will yield the (correct) result “Wo ist die Post.”
It even translates Shakespeare, although it’s a literal translation, not what one would commonly find in Shakespeare’s translated works.
“To be or not to be, that is the question in German” yields “Sein oder nicht sein, das ist die Frage.”
