United Reports Drop in Traffic, Capacity for April

United Airlines announced operational results for April 2016.  The carrier’s consolidated traffic, capacity, and load factor were all down year-over-year for the month.

Total traffic for the Chicago-based airline during the month of April was 16.361 billion RPMs, or revenue passenger miles, a decrease of 1.9% from 16.685 billion RPMs in April 2015.  The carrier’s total capacity for the month was down 0.9%, to 20.327 billion ASMs, or available seat miles, from 20.505 billion ASMs last April.

Meanwhile, United’s consolidated load factor decreased slightly, down 0.9 percentage points to 80.5% from 81.4% in April 2015.

In terms of international traffic, United saw a decrease of 3%, while its international capacity dropped by 2.3%.  The carrier saw a 0.6% increase in domestic traffic, with a 2.6% increase in capacity.

Mainline RPMs dropped 1.2% with no change in mainline ASMs, while regional RPMs dropped 7.1% with a 7.4% decrease in regional ASMs.
