Review: ‘Do I Hear a Waltz?’ – Encores Great American Musicals at City Center
Ms. Errico shines as Leona, (particularly in the show’s title song, giving this number new life and energy), believing she had finally found true love, while Ms. Ziemba is unquestionable the poster child for a worldly innkeeper.
“Do I Hear A Waltz” made it through 220 performances in its first and only Broadway run in the 60s but today, it’s like a time capsule and a very well done production. The orchestra – front and center on stage – delivers a lush accompaniment to love, fighting, indignation, and compromise, and even gets a cameo role. Although Rodgers reportedly felt the story would not lend itself to song and Sondheim worked on it with great reluctance after being recommended for it by his late mentor, Oscar Hammerstein, the audience nonetheless enthusiastically gave its approval.
