Starwood Hotels and Resorts announced that it will open a new Element hotel in Detroit in 2018. As its name denotes, the Element Detroit at the Metropolitan Building will be located in one of the city’s most historic venues, which is being converted to a mixed-use development.

The 14-story neo-gothic Metropolitan Building first opened in 1925 as a jewelry emporium. The building’s exterior will be restored and its interior will be renovated from top to bottom, although the original lobby and mezzanine will be preserved.

The hotel will have a total of 110 guestrooms, including studios and one-bedroom suites, each with a fully equipped kitchen and complimentary Wi-Fi. The property will also offer guests a 24-hour fitness center, an indoor pool, and complimentary bikes to use during their stay.

The new development will also include 2,000 square feet (185 square meters) of meeting and event space, approximately 7,000 square feet (650 square meters) of retail space, and an outdoor patio on the 11th floor.
