The 7er offers a rich sounding 16-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system that uses a microphone to adjust equalization for the 1,400 watts power output. Having had two BMWs with the vaunted Bang & Olufsen sound system for several years, I’d go for the B&W system without hesitation as the sound was cleaner and provided a more consistent experience in all four seats.

HD Radio and SiriusXM satellite radio are both standard as is Bluetooth streaming, which worked quite well. Apple CarPlay is not yet available but Siri works quite competently.

The newest feature is built into the new BMW Connected app and it is designed to keep track of the driver’s daily schedule and routine and proactively check traffic in the background for planned and possible drives. In our tests, it alerted me to potential delays to places I actually had planned on going to (it has access to my calendar) and let me know in one case that I needed to leave 30 minutes earlier than planned due to an accident on a nearby highway. As I entered the car, my next destination popped up on the navi before I even had a chance to think about exiting the garage.

The app is only available for the iPhone at this time but BMW plans to introduce an Android version as well. It works with most new model BMWs but the 7er is the only model that currently doesn’t require the phone to be plugged into the car’s USB port.

The new 7 Series unquestionably represents the future of BMW as well as the future of cars to come. Since its introduction as the brand’s flagship in 1977, it has served as a test bed for new technologies ranging from iDrive to active body control systems. The newest 7er, with its combination of understated elegant styling, the latest technology, and a generous dose of Freude am Fahren, is unquestionably expensive but well worthy of the title “King of the Hill.”
