2016 BMW 750i xDrive Sedan – Review and Test Drive

In the battle for the best luxury sedan or coupe, king of the hill if you would, it used to be cut and dried: one of the leading car magazines of the period would pit a Cadillac against a Lincoln and select the winner.

More recently, the contenders have been BMW and Mercedes, with the BMW 7er the clear driving enthusiast’s choice and the Mercedes S-Class the choice of those seeking the lap of luxury. Today Lexus, with the LS, and Audi, with its A8, also compete for the title of best luxury sedan but the answer is no longer as clear cut as it was.

For 2016, BMW completely reinvented the 7er. It’s bigger, lighter, faster, and more fuel efficient than before and buyers will find more standard features and options available.

To find out more, we had the new 7er in our short-term fleet earlier this year when a blizzard struck, thereby limiting the amount of time behind the wheel, and more recently, when a Mineral White Metallic 750i xDrive sedan arrived at FBT’s offices in New York City.


The 750i is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that develops an impressive 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, an amount of power more than sufficient to hurtle the 4,600-pound (2,086-kilogram) sedan down the Autobahn. While that may sound a bit hefty, it’s actually some 200 pounds (90 kilograms) lighter than the previous generation 7er and is capable of attaining 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standstill in just 4.3 seconds.

Thanks in part to an extremely efficient eight-speed automatic transmission and the liberal use of carbon fiber and lighter metals such as aluminum, the 750i achieves 25 mpg (9.4 l/100 km) on the Autobahn and 16 (14.7) in the city, with a combined EPA average of 19 mpg (12.4 l/100 km).


The new 7er exudes an air of familiarity from the moment you see it and that is reinforced once you open the driver’s door. The driver-oriented dash, the beer tap-like shifter, the blue-and-white roundel are all there. But then you look around and something is obviously different.

Our first 7er was outfitted like a corporate jet, with the Rear Executive Lounge Seating and Interior Design packages that included a reclining seat with massage and footrest in the rear. While the accouterments of these options take nothing away from the handling, they add the capability for the 7er to serve as an extremely comfortable car for passengers.
