Photo Essay: Brussels After the Attacks

BRUSSELS— The events of March 22 brought Brussels, a city known for its beer, waffles, and French fries, and culture, to a standstill.   “Unnecessary movement” was discouraged and offices, shops, schools as well as the airport and public transportation were shut down.

The “atmosphere of war,” as one paper described it, is largely gone less than a month later, but, as these photographs attest, visitors are in short supply.

Here is what I saw in recent days walking around what I found to be a safe and very welcoming capital.
