New Hotel to Open on the Grounds of Versailles
French hotelier Lov Hotel Collection will open a 20-room boutique hotel on the grounds of the Palace of Versailles later this decade in partnership with Chef Alain Ducasse.
The board of directors of Versailles voted Friday to approve the plan, which will include a haute-cuisine restaurant run by Ducasse, when it opens in 2018. The hotel itself will be housed in the buildings known as the Grand Contrôle, Petit Contrôle, and Pavillon des Premières Cent Marches. These buildings have been vacant since 2008 and are located on the southeast area of the property.
The news follows an 18-month bidding process and the group committed to invest €25 million ($28.5 million) to transform the buildings into a luxury hotel. Amenities will include a spa, an indoor swimming pool, and views of the palace’s orange grove and Bosquet de la Reine gardens.
Versailles, located in the Île-de-France region, became the center of political power in France when Louis XIV moved his court there from Paris in 1682. It remained there until 1789 and the French Revolution.
