IMGP5618 (1)Delta Air Lines said Friday it had paid out $1.5 billion in profit sharing to employees.

The move followed Delta’s report of a $4.5 billion profit for 2015.

The $1.5 billion sum is the largest employee profit sharing payment in U.S. history, the airline’s CEO, Richard Anderson, and incoming CEO, Ed Bastian, wrote in a memo to employees. The individual payout represents 21.4% of eligible annual pay.

“We are often asked what makes Delta different,” Anderson and Bastian said in the memo. “The difference is you. Our unique people-focused culture… is the advantage that none of our competitors can match.”

The airline celebrated the news with ads thanking its employees in major newspapers across the country, including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
