Winter Storm to Impact 20 States, Over 5,000 Flights Cancelled

Meteorologists are warning of a major storm that will cross the path of over 85 million people and affect millions of travelers.

A good part of the East Coast can expect over a foot of snow, winds of 50 mph (80 km/h), and blizzard conditions through Sunday.

The storm will impact the East Coast from north Georgia to the Carolinas, the Appalachians, the Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and go as far west and south as central Arkansas and northeast Louisiana.

Washington, D.C. will likely be hit the hardest and blizzard warnings are in effect there as well as in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City.

States of Emergency have been declared in Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia, allowing the governors of those states to muster additional resources to provide assistance to residents.

As of noon Friday, over 5,000 flights have been cancelled in anticipation of the storm and more cancellations are expected. American Airlines said Thursday that it was canceling all flights to Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia on Saturday and Washington’s metro system will shut down for the weekend.
