WestJet announced the launch of new non-stop service from Edmonton International Airport in Alberta, Canada to Kahului Airport in Maui, Hawaii.

The carrier plans to operate the route three days a week, using Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

WestJet took delivery of its first 767-300 last August. The carrier has been flying the aircraft between Calgary and Toronto in order to obtain ETOPS or extended operation certification, which allows the airline to operate twin-engine planes for extended periods of time between diversion airports, such as on the new route from Edmonton to Hawaii.

The certification was a requirement for WestJet’s new service to Maui, as well as for the carrier’s upcoming service to London Gatwick, which is scheduled to begin this May.
