The bulkhead window seats on the Airbus – namely mine, 1A, and 1H on the other side of the aisle, do not have any overhead bins so there is a feeling of greater space than elsewhere on the aircraft.

IN-FLIGHT SERVICE

Once we were at our cruising altitude, the flight attendants began the dinner service, knowing most passengers wanted to sleep after dining. After placing a white table cloth on the diminutive tray table, the purser offered a beverage (I opted for sparkling wine) and a ramekin filled with warm nuts.

The meal started with a tasty tomato tart amuse bouche accompanied by artichoke hearts and olives. Also on the tray was a mixed green salad with sundried tomatoes, shaved parmesan cheese, and toasted pine nuts, with sour cream and herb dressing. I’m particularly fond of what Italians call “pinoli” and the salad was one of the better ones I’ve had on a flight.

For the main course, I had a choice of a coffee encrusted beef filet, blackened salmon, spinach ravioli, or my eventual selection, roasted duck breast. I was ambivalent about having duck on a plane but it turned out to be very tasty and was accompanied by what I considered an unusual pairing, a curry lime sauce, as well as jasmine rice.

For dessert, I opted for the raspberry tart (there was a Heath Bar Crunch ice cream option as well as a cheese plate) and called it a day.

Shortly thereafter, it was time to go to sleep. The seat easily converts to a comfortable bed and I borrowed a spare duvet from an unoccupied seat to use as a mattress topper along with an extra pillow. I slept well and awoke approximately 45 minutes before landing in Munich, with enough time to have a quick breakfast. I opted for granola, which was accompanied by fresh fruit (the melons were particularly good) and yogurt, warmed biscuits and pastries, and a choice of coffee or tea and a selection of juices. The coffee was the only disappointment I had during the flight. It was basically undrinkable and I stopped after two sips.
