BOARDING

It took only a few minutes to walk over to Gate 20, where boarding had already started.

American invites its business class passengers to board first, followed by elite members of its AAdvantage frequent flyer program. Once general boarding has started, business-class passengers can board without any delay using the Priority queue, which is what I did, bypassing about 100 people and saving substantial time.

Once on board, I saw that flight attendants in US Airways uniform were preparing the cabin for takeoff, offering pre-departure beverages, and hanging up coats. This was a full flight yet the process was orderly and fast.

As I took my seat, the purser handed out American’s new heritage business-class amenity kits. The company’s series of amenity kits honors various airlines which merged over the years with the new American, including Allegheny, Piedmont, TWA, and US Airways. Mine was for Air Cal, an airline that admittedly never flew the PHL-MUC route. “We embrace our history with a feeling of pride” reads the tag on the kits.

The kit includes products from Red Flower, a New York-based company that focuses on wellness and the environment. US Airways had begun using the company’s moisturizer and lip balm in 2013 and American has continued that relationship. The kit also included eye shades and socks in a color scheme that matches the heritage airline’s colors, as well as a toothbrush, toothpaste, and ear plugs.

FLIGHT PLAN

American Flight 716, slated to depart at 6:30 p.m., left the gate six minutes early and arrived at the gate in Munich, Germany, the following morning at 8:10 a.m., 40 minutes early
