Most of all, we appreciated the driver assistance and safety features that are now part of the i-Activsense package ($1,500). The package includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and collision avoidance braking. The GT Tech package adds navigation, LED headlights and taillights (as well as LED fog lamps and running lamps), and what Mazda calls Smart City Brake Support, which continuously scans ahead of the vehicle for a collision risk, preps the brakes if necessary, and if no braking action on the driver’s part follows, applies the brakes and reduces throttle automatically.

The EPA rates the CX-5 at 24 mpg (9.8 l/100 km) in the city and 30 (7..84) on the highway. In our week with the Mazda, we saw 24 mpg (9.8 l/100 km) with a mixture of city and highway driving.  In addition, in the course of over 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) over the preceding few weeks, the CX-5 averaged 28 mpg (8.4 l/100 km) with an average speed of 24 mph (39 km/h).

BOTTOM LINE

For a car that sits in the $22,000-$30,000 price range with reasonably priced driver assistance options, the Mazda CX-5 is driver’s car masquerading in the body of a crossover. It’s an excellent bargain and the combination of good fuel economy, excellent handling, a spacious and functional interior, and the availability of important safety features should translate to fun for the whole family.
