A 7” central display is evidence of the presence of Mazda’s new Connect infotainment system, which uses a steering wheel controller reminiscent of Audi to reduce the need to actually touch buttons or the touchscreen.

The addition of an electric parking brake cleans up the console, and front occupants now have two USB jacks (as well as an aux port) ensuring that everyone arrives at their destination with charged smartphones. Bluetooth for phone and streaming audio is now standard on all models.

Storage options abound, including an open storage bin at the base of the center stack and a small tray that was perfect for a garage parking pass.

DRIVING THE MAZDA CX-5

While the engine doesn’t go mmmmm, and it’s somewhat noisy inside the cabin, its ability to go from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 7.7 seconds makes for a reasonably fast ride.

The new sports mode was greatly appreciated by FBT staffers, especially those who autocross, but buyers should note that it is a very aggressive mode that – were one to close one’s eyes – almost places it in the sports sedan category.

Steering contributes to the sports sedan theme. The car’s steering has a decent amount of road feel and feedback and the turning radius is quite good.
