United Selling Eco-Friendly Carry-On Backpacks for Charity
United Airlines announced that it is now offering eco-friendly carry-on bags manufactured from its very own “Fly the Friendly Skies” banners that were in use at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport.
The airline worked with the Columbia College Chicago Department of Fashion Studies to design them, challenging the students to create a bag that could fit underneath a typical seat in coach, be good looking as well as economical to manufacture, and be durable. The resultant design was then manufactured by the Re:new Project, a non-profit organization that provides employment to refugee women, which made 100 eco-friendly bags.
One hundred lucky passengers were able to purchase the Eco-Skies Upcycled Duffel Bag, which measures 9” x 10” x 17” and comes with detachable shoulder straps and a full lining at the airline’s online shop.
Proceeds from the sale of the bags will go to the Re:new as well as the Alto Mayo Forest Carbon Project in Northern Peru.
