ROAD WARRIOR SUPPORT

The room boasted a large writing desk and a decidedly non-ergonomic chair whose cushion had long preceded the rest of the chair in needing replacement. I asked a colleague of mine to try sitting on the chair for a few minutes and use the MacBook and he sprung up after about 30 seconds complaining of the discomfort.

Internet was also problematic. In speed tests, it tested well, but in actual throughput it was slow to non-responsive. Others attending the meeting complained of similar problems.

WELLNESS

The property sits on 312 acres of hills along the Potomac River, and offers guests much to do including tennis courts, swimming pools, and 45 holes of championship golf courses. Spa Minérale offers a wide variety of massages and treatments, but my time at the property (one night) was limited and I didn’t have the opportunity to do more than take a long walk around the property to admire it.

DINING

The Landsdowne has four dining venues. The evening of my arrival, I dined at Stonewalls Tavern and greatly enjoyed the chicken wings as well as the pickled carrots. My shrimp and crab bisque, however, came lukewarm, but the cornbread skillet that accompanied the soup was delicious. The friendly waitress was quite helpful in celebrating my colleague’s birthday (Happy Birthday, Jesse!) by bringing out a brownie with candles and leading our corner of the room in song.

The next morning I had breakfast in the Riverside Hearth. The breakfast buffet was expansive: fresh fruit, breads and rolls, muffins, home-made granola, yoghurt parfaits, and smoothies were all there for the taking and quite good. My omelet was prepared to my specifications and was quite tasty.

BOTTOM LINE

The Landsdowne has some good points – a comfortable bed, good food, great golf and tennis – but its tired look combined with staff that lack the polish that one might expect makes me question whether I would want to stay there again, given that there are so many choices in the DC area that come without such baggage.
