American Airlines Pilot Dies Mid-Flight En Route to Boston
The pilot of an American Airlines plane died en route from Phoenix to Boston early on Monday.
The plane took off from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport shortly after midnight local time and made an emergency landing in Syracuse around 7:00 a.m. EDT.
A crew member notified air traffic control in Syracuse of the situation. “Captain is incapacitated,” he said according to a recording posted at LiveATC.net.
American Airlines Flight 550, which was operated using an Airbus A320 aircraft, was en route with 147 passengers and five crew members on board when the pilot became ill. The aircraft landed safely at Syracuse Hancock International Airport at 7:10 a.m. with the first officer in control of the plane. The captain was pronounced dead at the airport.
The flight continued on to Boston and landed there around 12:30 p.m.
