Germany announced on Sunday that, using emergency powers, it was reinstating temporary controls at its southern border with Austria, after being overwhelmed by the tens of thousands of migrants from countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria.

In addition, train service between the two countries was suspended as of 5:00 p.m. local time.

The move was announced by the country’s Bundesminister des Innern or Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière at a news conference in Berlin.

On Saturday, over 12,000 refugees arrived by train from Austria and Hungary to Germany.
