DSC_0053Alitalia announced that its chief executive resigned for personal reasons early Friday.  The move comes at a critical period in the airline’s turnaround in a partnership with Etihad Airways.

The CEO, Silvano Cassano, first took the position with the Italian flag carrier last year.

The airline said that the resignation took effect immediately and that senior executives including Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo will temporarily take on Cassano’s duties while a search for a new CEO takes place.

“We will now turn to the next phase of our strategy of transforming our business under a new guide,” said Mr. Montezemolo in a statement.
