Slow and Expensive Internet and Insufficient Electrical Outlets Top Hotel Pet Peeves List for 4th Year Running
Everyone who travels has his own list of annoyances and little irritations that have become synonymous with the word “hotel”, as one or more of these issues always seems to pop up no matter where you are staying. The purpose of the Frequent Business Traveler Hotel Pet Peeves survey is to bring such lists together in a manner that presents the trials and tribulations that vex frequent travelers on a regular basis.
Five years ago, in conjunction with FlyerTalk, the world’s largest travel community, Frequent Business Traveler started to compile a comprehensive list of hotel-related pet peeves. Using the results, we then surveyed our readers with the goal of finding out what bugged them the most about their hotel stays. The results of each year’s survey, as well as extensive online discussion in FlyerTalk have guided us, over the years, in constructing the ensuing surveys. In this manner we’ve been able to refine the list of peeves by eliminating some, which turned out to be inconsequential, and adding new ones, such as bathroom design, and noise (which combined several types of noise that were previously listed separately).
This year, in partnership with FlyerTalk and ExpertFlyer, a leading air travel information tool, we asked readers to rank their peeves in descending order from most to least irksome. Choices ranged from cigarette smoke odor to alarm clock left on, as well as favorites such as expensive and/or slow Internet and insufficient electrical outlets, both of which have placed as the top three peeves for the past four years.
This year, the poll garnered almost 2,000 responses from some of the world’s most devoted travelers, and, with a few exceptions, we found that the results did not differ much from last year’s. The topic generated substantial discussion on FlyerTalk, where it accumulated over 16,000 page views and 183 responses.
Taking the first and second spots for the fourth year in a row were Expensive and/or Slow Internet and Hard to Reach or Insufficient Outlets, respectively.
Next was Poor Room Cleanliness, a new addition to the poll this year, but clearly an instantly popular one. Cigarette smoke odor, in its second year on the poll, finished in fourth place, dropping one from its third place finish last year.
In fifth and sixth place were Climate Control Not Easily Adjustable and Noise of Any Kind, two choices that have ranked in the top six for the past five years.
Insufficient Water Pressure or Temperature took seventh place, the fifth year that the choice placed in the top seven, dropping one position since last year. This was followed by Unexpected Fees (including Resort Fees), also in the top six or seven for the past three years.
Uncomfortable Pillows and Insufficient or Poor Lighting rounded out the top 10 peeves as numbers nine and ten respectively.
