El Al’s 747s: soon to be replaced?

El Al Israel Airlines announced plans to purchase and lease 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on Thursday.  The order, worth approximately $900 million at list prices, would be the Israeli flag carrier’s largest ever.  El Al also has purchase rights for 13 additional aircraft.

The airline said it plans to put the Dreamliners into service starting in the first half of 2017 through 2020. The high-tech airliners will replace a fleet of aging 747-400 and 767 aircraft on medium- and long-haul routes, including those linking Israel with North America and Asia.

“I am proud to announce today the largest procurement program in El Al’s history,” said David Maimon, the airline’s CEO, in a statement, adding that the order will be “a significant leap forward in optimizing routes, passenger service and flight experience.”

“The Dreamliner will be an excellent addition to EL AL’s all-Boeing fleet and marks another chapter in a partnership between our two companies that spans over half a century, said Ray Conner, president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
