2015 BMW 228i Convertible – Review and Road Test

June means one thing in my book: droptop season. No sooner had the calendar turned and Memorial Day passed than convertibles and roadsters began their pilgrimage to the Frequent Business Traveler garage. One of the first in line was a Glacier Silver Metallic BMW 228i Convertible (Cabrio in its home market), the ragtop version of the new two-door 2 Series that replaced the two-door 1 Series (BMW now reserves even numbers for vehicles with a coupe-like appearance, while sedans get odd numbers).

Getting the 2er in allowed me to check the 2 Series off my list. I’ve now driven every numeric series BMW offers from the 1er to the 8er (last produced in 1999).

The first day we had the 2er the skies looked threatening and we had to put up the top when a torrential downpour came out of nowhere, but otherwise, for the time the 2er remained in our short-term fleet, the weather remained reasonably sunny and clear.

As one would expect, the 228i has a driver-oriented cockpit and there’s seating for three additional passengers, sort of, since using the wind deflector precludes the driver from having more than one passenger. When not using the deflector, knee room is at a premium but children will love the rear seat. The Coral Red Dakota leather with black trim make quite a statement and it’s all the more striking because Cabrio drivers will typically keep the top down as much as possible.

Our model was a Sport Line, which added 18-inch double-spoke light alloy wheels, black door-mirror caps, an anthracite headliner, sports seats, an increased top speed before the limiter kicks in, and M Sport suspension calibration. The sports seats were most appreciated as they are among the most supportive and comfortable seats on the market today.

Inside, the latest version of BMW’s iDrive cockpit controller comes paired to an 8.8” display and the controller itself has an integrated touchpad that makes it easy to trace letters when entering destinations and other information.
