DSC_0108United Airlines announced that it plans to acquire an approximate 5% stake in Azul Brazilian Airlines, for $100 million.  United’s investment will also give it one seat on the Brazilian carrier’s board of directors.

With the deal, the two carriers will also begin codesharing on various routes, as well as begin joint loyalty program participation.

Pending government approval, United Airlines will be allowed to place its code on Azul-operated flights from São Paulo–Guarulhos International Airport to major destinations in Brazil, as well as on Azul flights to Florida.  In addition, Azul Brazilian Airlines will be able to place its code on United routes throughout North America and the Caribbean.

Under the agreement, members of both Unted Airline’s MileagePlus and Azul Brazilian Airlines’ TudoAzul loyalty programs will be able to earn and redeem miles and benefits on both carriers’ flights.
