DSC_0420Boeing announced the appointment of Dennis Muilenburg to the position of chief executive officer.  Muilenburg, who has served as the airplane manufacturer’s chief operating officer and president since 2013, is a three-decade veteran of the company.  The appointment is effective July 1.

McNerney will continue as chairman of the board and as a Boeing employee until he retires at the end of February 2016.  He has served as CEO since 2005.

“Dennis is an extremely capable, experienced and respected leader with an immense passion for our company, our people, and our products and services,” said McNerney in a written statement.

Muilenburg joined Boeing as an engineering intern in Seattle in 1985.  He holds a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University and a master’s in aeronautics and astronautics from the University of Washington.

The Chicago-based company appointed Muilenburg to the company’s board of directors simultaneously with his promotion.
