Southwest Reports March Traffic and Prasm Increase

DSC_0826Southwest Airlines announced operational results for March 2015, as well as for the first quarter of 2015.

The carrier’s total system traffic for March was 10.241 billion RPMs, or revenue passenger miles, a year-over-year increase of 6.7% from 9.596 billion RPMs in March 2014.  For Q1 2015, Southwest had 25.861 billion RPMs, a 7.1% increase from 24.155 billion RPMs in Q1 2014.

The airline had a total system capacity of 12.144 billion ASMs, or available seat miles, for the month, up 4.4% from 11.605 billion last March.  The carrier’s total system traffic for the quarter was 32.297 billion ASMs, an increase of 6% from last year’s 30.475 billion.

Meanwhile, passenger load factor 84.5%, a 1.8 percentage point increase from 82.7% last March.  The airline’s load factor for Q1 2015 was 80.1%, up 0.8 percentage points from 79.3% last year.

Southwest also said that its Prasm, or passenger revenue per available seat mile, had increased by approximately 1% year-over-year.
