Photo Essay: Hilton Head Island, Lowcountry, South Carolina
Hilton Head Island, known for its natural beauty and beaches, is one of several Lowcountry resort towns in South Carolina (the others include Kiawah Island and St. Simon’s Island). With 12 miles (19 kilometers) of Atlantic Ocean beachfront, it’s a favorite of vacationers year round.
The eco-friendly town and island are named after Captain William Hilton who named it after himself shortly after identifying a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound on an exploratory voyage.
Hilton Head offers visitors a vast array of outdoor and cultural activities that belie its small size. These include Broadway-style productions at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, performances by the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra and the Hilton Head Choral Society, the Heritage Golf Classic on the PGA Tour, played on the Habour Town Golf Links in the Sea Pines Resort, and the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival and Concours d’Elegance, now in its 13th year.
