Bowers & Wilkins A5 AirPlay Speaker – Review

Bowers & Wilkins, or B&W, is a British company known for its high-fidelity speakers. It has added consumer electronics to its product lineup, and one recent addition is the Apple AirPlay-equipped A5.

The A5 is an elegant black rectangular unit with metallic accents that houses twin 20W mid and low range speakers as well as twin 20W tweeters. Included is an egg-shaped remote that controls power as well as volume, play/pause and other functions, but the remote will probably not be needed in normal use when streaming music from an iPhone or iPad.

The A5 connects wirelessly via Wi-Fi or RJ-45 wired connection (sorry, no Bluetooth) and a 3.5 mm auxiliary audio input is provided.

The speaker was easy to set up. Simply download the free B&W iOS app and it finds the speaker and walks you through the process. The setup took less than five minutes on my iPhone 6 Plus and, once completed, the speaker (with the name of my choosing) appeared on the AirPlay menu and began to play my selection.

For those wishing to use the speaker for AirPlay audio on a Mac or PC, B&W offers a set-up app that can be downloaded from its website.

An unfortunate oversight is that no charging dock (unlike on the company’s Zeppelin Mini) is provided for an iPhone or iPad .
