DINING

All of the dining and bar areas in the hotel are visually appealing and the service is among the best. The hotel boasts of two signature restaurants − Galvin Brasserie DeLuxe and the Pompadour. The Brasserie is a Parisian-style restaurant; we dined at The Pompadour which dates back to 1925 features classical French food prepared by Craig Sandle, executive chef, who joined the restaurant from the highly-regarded Number One restaurant at Edinburgh’s Balmoral Hotel.

Our meal began with an assortment of scrumptious starters whose presentation was only surpassed by their flavors. The beet, goat cheese and walnut salad exploded in our mouths. Our fish and beef main courses were sublime. Each course was creative, clean to the palate and exceptional in taste. A baked soufflé and mango sorbet were cappers; and the complimentary macaroons were over the top.

A traditional Scottish breakfast and buffet is a special event at the Caley. The buffet offered a broad range of meats, cheeses, cereals and breads to Scottish specialty dishes including black pudding, haggis and lorne sausage.

We also enjoyed a light lunch in Peacock Alley, the former rail station’s concourse and ticket area. The room is large with high ceilings and still has an old clock from the steam railway times. Peacock Alley features a large bar, serves afternoon tea and boasts a large screen across the front of the room onto which is projected a whimsical grouping of peacock feathers.

BOTTOM LINE

The Caledonian is centrally located to many of Edinburgh’s key historical attractions, restaurants and shops. The hotel’s restoration and attention to detail makes it very appealing; its staff and service are outstanding. Though our room was not overly inviting, the common areas and restaurants/bars more than compensated in welcoming us to Scotland. It’s a great way to get to know this very charming city.
