Marriott announced that it began construction on new meeting and event space at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina.  When the project is completed in summer 2016, the hotel will have over 240,000 square feet (22,296 square meters) of event space, one of the largest spaces on the West Coast.

The property currently has 80,000 square feet (7,432 square meters) of space, including 47 meeting rooms.  The expansion will create two stacked 36,000-square-foot (3,344-square-meter) ballrooms overlooking the San Diego Bay, each capable of accommodating up to 4,500 guests, with designs inspired by Southern California beaches and sunsets.  The space will also have a glass curtain wall offering views of downtown San Diego.

A Swarovski crystal ceiling installation will also be inserted in the pre-function area.  In addition, a video wall system will be added as part of the expansion.

A 26,450-square-foot (2,457-square-meter) outdoor space called the Marina Terrace will also be added to the hotel.

A new space called the Marina Walk will also be created, and will connect the San Diego Bay with the downtown area.  The landscaped walkway will have bike racks, benches, and public art, and will be wheelchair-accessible.
