Delta First Class Flight 401 Austin, Texas-New York JFK – Review

Delta’s Airbus A320 narrow-body airliners have 12 recliner seats in first class in a 2-2 configuration. Each is 21” wide with a generously sized armrest and seat pitch is 36”. My seat, 1A (yes, Mr. Spira and I are having a contest to see who can sit in 1A more often this year), had somewhat more seat pitch due to its being the bulkhead row.

The seat itself was well cushioned and roomy, with sufficient recline for the three and one-half hour journey.

Once we were at cruising altitude, a flight attendant took meal orders and began the service. Beverages were offered followed by a light dinner. The cold beef salad sounded appealing and was accompanied by a fruit-and-cheese platter and breadsticks. All in all, it wasn’t bad. The beef itself was tasty although a bit tough and but I really enjoyed the cheeses and fresh grapes that accompanied it.

Throughout the flight, the flight attendant was in the aisle, offering snacks from Delta’s extensive snack basket as well as drinks.

Based on its speed, the A320 seemingly had Gogo’s first –generation air-to-ground Wi-Fi service, which was not overly fast. It supported necessary work-related tasks such as e-mail and doing research on the Web but it was frequently slow in bringing up Web pages.

We arrived at JFK ten minutes later than planned although a speedy taxi to the gate reduced the delay to five minutes. It was a quick three and a half hour journey.

Delta’s hard product as well as service was excellent this time around but the dinner menus, especially for a mid-con flight of over three hours, were somewhat disappointing. A comfortable seat and a smooth ride make for a great flight but a tasty entrée would have truly been the icing on the cake.
