United Traffic and Capacity Up in January
United Airlines announced operational results for January 2015. Both the carrier’s consolidated traffic and consolidated capacity for the month were up slightly year-over-year, while its load factor decreased marginally.
Total traffic for the Chicago-based airline during the month of January was 15.401 billion RPMs, or revenue passenger miles, an increase of 1.1% from 15.228 billion RPMs in January 2014. The carrier’s total capacity for the month also increased by similar margins, up 1.4% to 19.082 billion ASMs, or available seat miles, from 18.823 billion ASMs last January.
United’s consolidated load factor, however, decreased slightly, down 0.2 percentage points to 80.7% from 80.9% in January 2014.
United’s international traffic rose 4.6%, while its international capacity increased by 4.2%. Meanwhile, the carrier saw a 2.8% decrease in domestic revenue passenger miles, with a 2% decrease in domestic available seat miles.
Mainline RPMs increased 0.9% with an increase of 1.2% in mainline ASMs, while regional RPMs increased 2.9% with a 2.7% increase in regional ASMs.
