Fraport AG, the owner and operator of Frankfurt Airport, announced traffic figures for January 2014.

The airport’s passenger traffic for the month increased 1.3% year-over-year in large part thanks to an increase in intercontinental traffic.  Even with the increase in traffic, aircraft movements at the airport were down by 2.6% to 34,611 takeoffs and landings.

The airport did however report an increase in accumulated maximum takeoff weights of 2.6% to ca. 2.2 million metric tons or MTOW.  The figures are indicative of the use of larger, more efficient aircraft and denser seating in airliners.  Indeed, the average MTOW per aircraft movement rose from 121.4 to 127.9 metric tons year-over-year.

Cargo, which includes airfreight and airmail, in Frankfurt dropped slightly by 0.8%.  Fraport attributes this to a later than usual Chinese New Year.
