American Replaces United as Official Airline of the Chicago Cubs
American Airlines, the world’s largest airline and the second largest carrier in Chicago, has signed on to become the official airline of the Chicago Cubs baseball team and Wrigley Field.
United Airlines, which is headquartered in Chicago and had been the exclusive airline of the Cubs and Wrigley field since 2004, is in head-to-head competition with American in the Chicagoland market.
American has 8,500 employees in Chicago and considers itself “Chicago’s hometown airline,” said Fernand Fernandez, vice president of global marketing at American. “Taking the field with the Cubs – an iconic, all-American franchise – only deepens our ties and commitment to the Windy City.”
The term of the sponsorship was not disclosed beyond saying it is a “multi-year” agreement.
As part of the deal, American and the Cubs will add a new club space behind home plate and provide access for premium box seat ticket holders. It will host employees, fans, and the team at various events and festivities throughout the season, which will include Cubs player and mascot appearances.
The Fort Worth-based airline is also going to be the sponsor of the American Airlines Executive Conference Center in an office building that will be built next to Wrigley Field.
