Other establishments worth a visit include Churchill’s Pub, the Melting Pot, and Papillote.

For dessert at any time of the day visit Leopold’s Ice Cream, which, with its marble soda fountain is a historic ice cream parlor filled with Hollywood memorabilia. Leopold’s offers over 50 flavors of ice cream – all made in house – that include pistachio (reportedly indulged in by FBT Editorial Director Jonathan Spira when he is in Savannah), tutti-frutti, chocolate chewies and cream, and many more. The establishment also serves delicious sandwiches and soups. In 2019, Leopold’s will celebrate its 100th anniversary.

HOW TO GET THERE

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, located 17 miles (27 kilometers) from the city center, is the most convenient way to access the city by air.

American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, United, and US Airways all offer flights to the city. Savannah is also served by Amtrak, which operates rail service along the East Coast and connects to the rest of the country.

It’s also easy to drive to Savannah from just about anywhere. Interstate 95 runs north-south just west of the city and connects to Interstate 16, which will lead visitors directly to the city center. U.S. Route 80 connects the city with Tybee and other islands, and the Truman Parkway connects the city’s east end with Southside neighborhoods.

BOTTOM LINE

Savannah, a bastion of the south, is a beautiful city full of history and unique southern hospitality representing the old south in a gracious and welcoming manner. Tour the numerous historic homes, walk along the riverfront, and take a relaxing stroll along Tybee Island’s pristine beaches. If you’re looking for great Southern cooking and southern hospitability, then Savannah might be the place.
