What’s Doing in Savannah
Two of the city’s larger and more business-oriented hotels are the Marriott, at the end of River Street, and the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, located on Hutchinson Island next to the convention center. The Westin has a top-rated golf course that hosted the 2010 Georgia PGA State Open Championship as well as a highly regarded spa. Both provide excellent facilities for meetings and events.
WHERE TO EAT
Circa 1875 is an authentic Parisian bistro offering a wide variety of French dishes including superb pâté and cassoulet. Mrs. Wilkes, open for lunch only, typically has a queue forming by 11:30 in the morning and accepts no reservations. It’s worth the wait for some of the best Southern cooking in the state.
Located in the Andaz hotel, 22 Square offers diners farm-to-table Southern cuisine. It owes its excellent reviews to Chef Lauren Teague, who is unquestionably one of the top hotel restaurant chefs in the region. Start with the cheese board, a mundane offering in most establishments but something special here with several unusual offerings. Continue with the tuna carpaccio, and go for any of the locally grown and harvested produce and meat dishes on the menu.
The Crab Shack on Tybee Island offers diners fresh and delicious seafood. Try the seafood platter, which includes King Crab legs, rock crab, local fresh shrimp, boiled potatoes, boiled kielbasa, boiled crawfish, and fresh corn-on-the-cob and be sure to visit the alligators while you are there.
In town, the River House Seafood Restaurant, located on the ground floor of the Cotton Sail Hotel, specializes in excellent shrimp and grits as well as memorable cocktails.
For a fun breakfast outing, go to Funky Brunch Café, on East Broughton, where diners can cook their own pancakes on the griddle built into many of the tables.
