One year ago, at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, Mini unveiled the all-new Mini to the public. This year, the performance-oriented version of the new Mini, the Mini John Cooper Works, celebrated its world premiere in Detroit.

The Mini John Cooper Works is powered by a turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder engine that develops a maximum output of 228 horsepower with a maximum torque of 236 pound-feet . Acceleration from a standstill to 62 mph (100 km/h) takes 6.3 seconds while the average fuel economy is 35 mpg (6.7 l/100 km) with a six-speed manual transmission.

CADILLAC

Cadillac was on stage with the world premiere of the most powerful product in the brand’s 112-year history, the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V. The CRTS-V is intended to be a world-class performance luxury cars and will compete mainly with the BMW M 5 and the Mercedes E63 AMG.

Cadillac’s answer to its Teutonic competitors is an all-new supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine with a power output of 640 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration from a standstill to 60 mph (96 km/h) is a mere 3.7 seconds. The new engine features direct fuel injection, lightweight titanium intake valves, and cylinder deactivation via the Active Fuel Management. Cadillac did not announce fuel economy figures for the CTS-V, which will hit dealer showrooms in late summer.

MERCEDES-BENZ

Mercedes-Benz is following the footsteps of the BMW X6 and unveils the all-new GLE Coupe in Detroit. Mercedes-Benz offers the new SUV Coupe with a choice of two engine variants, namely the GLE 350d and the GLE 400. It is expected that only latter one will be available for customers in North America. The diesel engine of the GLE 350d produces 258 horsepower and offers a maximum torque of 457 pound-feet . The GLE 400 offers 333 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. For customers looking for more power, Mercedes offers a turbocharged GLE 450 AMG with 367 horsepower. All GLE models are standard fitted with Mercedes-Benz all-wheel drive system 4Matic and the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission.

The GLE 450 AMG is also the first model of the new AMG sports model series (comparable with the BMW M Performance models). The GLE 450 AMG is joined by the Mercedes C 450 AMG, the second model of the new AMG sports models. The C450 AMG is powered by a turbocharged V6 engine with 365 horsepower

After Mercedes-Benz premiered its hybrid technology in the S-Class in 2014, the hybrid technology is making its debut in the C-Class. The Mercedes-Benz C350 Plug-In Hybrid is powered by a four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor. Both engines offer a combined power output of 275 horsepower with a maximum torque of 443 pound-feet. The Hybrid accelerates within 5.9 seconds from a standstill to 60 mph (97 km/h) and can cover a total distance of 20 miles (32 km) in all-electric driving mode.

Another highlight at the Mercedes-Benz show floor was the presentation of the F 015 concept car, which saw its debut a few days ago at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The F 015 provides a first glimpse in the future of individual mobility and autonomous driving.

The concept features a lounge-like interior atmosphere where passengers sit on variable adjustable seats and can use their time to work, to relax or to read a newspaper while the fully automated car drives itself to the preset destination. A total of six display screens, integrated into the instrument panel and the rear and side panel provide real-time information of the car and from the outside world. All screens can be operated by gestures, eye-tracking, or by touching.

VOLKSWAGEN

On the eve of the show, Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, announced the first details on the all-new VW Cross Coupe GTE. The concept car made its world premiere during the press conference of Volkswagen and focuses on the SUV market of the United States.

The Cross Coupe GTE is powered by a 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine and two electric motors. Its maximum power output is 360 horsepower making it possible to reach a maximum speed of 129.8 mph (209 km/h). The plug-in hybrid is able to cover a distance of 19.8 miles (32 km) purely by electricity. As the Cross Coupe GTE is focusing on the North American market, Volkswagen is planning to manufacture the new SUV at the production plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
