Delta Air Lines announced the opening of 11 new gates at its terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City.

The Atlanta-based airline added 75,000 square feet (6,968 square meters) of space and 11 gates at Terminal 4 of JFK.  The project is part of Delta’s $1.2 billion overall investment at the airport.

With the opening of the new gates, Delta is relocating a number of its Delta Connection regional flights to Terminal 4 from Terminal 2.

Last month, the airline’s chief revenue officer, Glen Hauenstein, said that the so-called horseshoe used at JFK’s Terminal 2 for regional flights was “the last component of our New York City expansion that has kept us from having a competitive product.”  The horseshoe is a set of makeshift covered walkways that run along the tarmac to regional aircraft and were also referred to by some as the “hamster tubes.”

The new gates in Terminal 4 feature enclosed jet bridges and will allow travelers to have easy access to the airline’s flagship Sky Club, which features an outdoor terrace.

Delta’s plans for JFK were announced in 2010 and included a major expansion of Terminal 4, the tearing down of the former Pan Am Worldport, and a renovation of Terminal 2.  The airline moved the majority of its operations to Terminal 4 in May of 2013.
