Uber Faces Ban in French Capital
Ride-sharing service Uber is facing a new attempt to ban it from operating in France. On Monday, the French government announced it would do just that.
The move followed a judge’s ruling on Friday that allowed Uber’s UberPop service to continue to operate, which prompted a strike by Parisian taxi drivers on Monday, snarling traffic. UberPop is similar to the UberX service in the United States,
Taxi associations there had filed suit against Uber, saying the company should not be permitted to operate in Paris, a city where a taxi license can cost as much as $300,000.
The ban, which is to go into effect on January 1, 2015, is derived from new legislation called the Thévenoud Law, which requires any driver for hire to have a license and the necessary insurance.
The move comes after governments in cities across the globe including Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, and Delhi have moved to ban Uber.
