The oneworld airline alliance announced the addition of new benefits for flyers with Emerald and Sapphire status.

Starting Monday, both Emerald and Sapphire members will receive priority baggage delivery on all oneworld-member flights regardless of the cabin flown.  The benefit is similar to that provided to first- and business-class passengers on the airline.

In addition, Sapphire members now receive an additional baggage allowance that translates to 33 pounds (15 kilograms) over the standard allowance for coach seats on international or domestic itineraries where baggage is weighed, as well as a second bag weighing up to 50.7 pounds (23 kilograms) when the ticketed allowance is one bag.  For domestic flights on which there is no baggage allowance, Sapphire members will be allowed to check at least one piece of luggage at no charge, and those traveling in business- or first-class cabins will in most cases receive a greater checked baggage allowance.

Currently, Sapphire members receive business-class check-in, priority boarding, preferred seating (where available), and lounge access.

The alliance said it was doing it to ensure that oneworld provides its most frequent flyers “with the highest levels of recognition, services and benefits when they need to travel beyond their home airline’s own network.”

Oneworld has three status tiers, starting with Ruby, equivalent to Gold on American Airlines and Bronze on British Airways; Sapphire for Platinum elites on American and Silver on BA; and the highest level, Emerald, equivalent to Executive Platinum and Concierge Key on AA and Gold and Premier on BA.
