BMW and Art Basel announced plans to create a mobile studio and support emerging artists in their work by sending them on what it called “journeys of creative discovery.”  The program will launch next year.

The BMW Art Journey will take artists virtually anywhere in the world with a goal of supporting the development of new ideas and helping them discover new themes and embark on new projects.

According to BMW, there are three components to an Art Journey:

1.)       The artist proposes the journey
2.)       The artist sets off on the journey
3.)       The artist reflects on the journey

BMW will award two Art Journeys per year.  The artists will be selected from those exhibiting in Art Basel’s sectors for emerging artists both in Miami Beach and in Hong Kong.

Jurors from around the world, including Richard Armstrong of the Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York, Matthias Mühling of the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich, and Victoria Noorthoorn of the Museo de Arte Moderna in Buenos Aires, will cull each of the two sectors down to three semi-finalists and invite these artists to submit a proposal for a journey.

The two finalists will then embark on their respective Art Journeys.

Art Basel is one of the leading international art shows for modern and contemporary works.
