Alaska Airlines announced that it will be offering one free checked bag to members of its Mileage Plan loyalty program during the entire month of January.  The carrier normally charges a $25 bag fee for the first checked bag.

Passengers who are not members may sign up online prior to their trip, or at the airport before they check their bags.

All checked bags come with the airline’s baggage service guarantee, which entitles passengers to a $25 discount for use on a future Alaska Airlines flight or 2,500 Mileage Plan miles if their checked bag does not reach baggage claim within 20 minutes of the flight’s arrival at the gate.

The offer follows the carrier’s announcement last month that it would be making significant changes to its loyalty program beginning January 1, 2015.
